Marvel’s Thunderbolts was pitched as the MCU’s bold take on anti-heroes—a gritty, morally gray team-up of reformed villains and rogue operatives. With a cast of fan-favorite characters and a darker tone teased in trailers, expectations were sky-high. But while Thunderbolts had moments of fun and flair, there were also quite a few head-scratching moments that left even the most loyal Marvel fans confused.
Here are 7 things in Marvel’s Thunderbolts that just didn’t make sense, from bizarre logic gaps to underdeveloped plot points.
1. Why Are These the Chosen Heroes?
The biggest question from the get-go: Why this particular lineup? With Bucky Barnes, Yelena Belova, Red Guardian, Ghost, U.S. Agent, and Taskmaster all coming together, the team felt like a random mishmash rather than a carefully curated unit. Their chemistry was inconsistent, and the film never clearly explained why these characters were the best choice for a black-ops team.
2. The Thunderbolts Mission Was… What Exactly?
The film’s central mission—a covert op to neutralize a mysterious rogue tech weapon—started with intrigue but quickly spiraled into confusion. The stakes were vague, the villain’s motives were unclear, and by the final act, it was hard to pinpoint what the Thunderbolts had actually achieved, other than surviving chaos.
3. Ghost’s Powers Keep Changing
Ghost’s quantum-phased powers were already complex in Ant-Man and the Wasp, but Thunderbolts took it a step further—without much explanation. One moment she’s walking through walls, the next she’s getting hit by energy blasts. There’s no consistency, making her a plot device rather than a compelling character.
4. Taskmaster Still Has No Personality
One of the biggest disappointments in Black Widow was how Taskmaster, a fan-favorite villain from the comics, was reduced to a nearly silent enforcer. Thunderbolts promised to give her more depth—but she remained flat and underwritten. No emotional arc, no meaningful dialogue—just more brooding stares and fight scenes.
5. Too Many Jokes Undercut the Tone
The film’s trailers promised something darker and edgier. But in classic Marvel fashion, quippy humor returned in full force. While some jokes landed (especially from Red Guardian), others undercut emotional scenes or moments of genuine tension, leaving the tone confused and inconsistent.
6. Valentina’s Role Was Barely Explained
Valentina Allegra de Fontaine has been teased across multiple Marvel projects as a Nick Fury-type figure for morally gray heroes. But in Thunderbolts, her role was vague and underdeveloped. She appeared just enough to confuse audiences but not enough to offer any real clarity on her intentions or long-term plans.
7. No Real Consequences
Despite the movie’s darker premise, there were surprisingly few lasting consequences. No major character deaths, no irreversible choices, and no clear fallout for the broader MCU. It felt like a one-off mission that didn’t move the needle in any meaningful way—which, in a shared universe as massive as Marvel’s, feels like a missed opportunity.
